Upon a head stone I once read “I am not gone I’m merely dead” This troubled me as it might For I stood there in fading light Now I’m quite sure I saw a ghost Leaning on a black fence post Dressed in garb from distant days I know I saw him through the haze Now like all apparitions must Dissipate and turn to dust It vanished from my failing eyes And I ran home through darkened skies
